Our Story

We are proudly supporting the wonderful work of Ronald McDonald House Charities® New Zealand, with $10 from each sale going to this amazing organisation.
Some years ago, Bruce, the designer of the Propeeler, had a dear friend go through the rigours of chemotherapy treatment for cancer, alongside a natural supplement diet of Beta Carotene. Family and friends rallied to prepare meals and Bruce was tasked with peeling pumpkins (Superfood packed with beta-carotene) - Crown, Butternut & Buttercup - for various dishes. For those who have not had the joy of peeling pumpkins, you need to know that - despite a choice of knives and peelers available - it’s a task fraught with danger. Virtually no knives or peelers are capable. Bruce searched globally high and low for the ‘perfect’ peeler only to be constantly disappointed. So, as any Kiwi would, he decided to design his own. “A beautiful one, that felt fit for purpose, was safe to use, and wouldn’t break. Not a plastic flimsy one. One that would be a “Product for Life” - that could peel anything put in its path including the Buttercup pumpkin….with an environmentally friendly linen bag to safely transport it about”. And so the Propeeler was born. Sadly Bruce’s beautiful friend passed away, but the product designed in her memory lives on. It’s amassed a cult following in New Zealand among foodies and NZ chefs.

The satisfying weight of the Propeeler and the way it fits the hand just so made excellent first impressions on me. This was quickly backed up by its effectiveness - I've enjoyed using it not only on pumpkins but on other root vegetables and fruit such as papaya - for both peeling skin and slicing the flesh nice and thin. the blade is lovely and sharp and feels like it will stand the test of time - hooray for a peeler that will stay the course in my kitchen; a tool that's built to last and helps to avoid plastic going to landfills. Featured Recipe:

Photograph courtesy of Todd Eyre 6-7 Kaffir Lime Leaves (or zest of limes) 3 red chillies, deseeded 2 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1x 5cm piece ginger, peeled and roughly chopped 3 lemongrass stems or lime zest, trimmed and roughly chopped sea-salt pepper 1 cup of coriander leaves Olivado Avocado and Lemon Zest oil 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice 1 tsp Cumin 2 tsp curry powder 5 shallots, sliced 1 butternut pumpkin, peeled and cut into 1cm dice 2 red kumara, cut into 1cm dice 1.5 litres of vegetable or chicken stock 2 tins coconut milk
Pop the lime leaves, chillies, garlic, ginger, lemongrass and a pinch of sea salt into a blender along with a handful of coriander (saving some for your garnish). Puree to combine and create a paste by adding in a couple of Tbs oil and continuing to blend to achieve a thick but liquid paste. Heat a large heavy based soup pan on the stove and add the aromatic paste, along with the 5 spice, cumin and curry powder. Cook for 1 minute stirring continuously, and then add the shallots and cook out on a low heat for around 5 minutes. Add the pumpkin and kumara and mix the vegetables to coat with the paste. Add in the hot stock and simmer your soup for 20 minutes until the vegetables are lovely and tender. Add the coconut milk and check seasoning. Remember the fish sauce, lime juice and chilli will add to your dish so careful with salt and pepper - just add to taste until you are happy. Puree the soup, leave it chunky and/or add rice and noodles to have a full meal in a bowl.
